Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind
Tell us about one of your favorite books.
My favorite book is Perfume by Patrick Suskind. It’s about a serial killer in France in the 18th century. It starts with this woman who gives birth to her unwanted child in a fish market under the table and she leaves the baby there amongst the fish guts. This kid is born unwanted and he has this terrible, terrible life, but he has this incredibly acute sense of smell. He ends up working for a perfumery so he learns and articulates all these scents, and then he becomes a serial killer. He’s attracted to the pheromones of women, their scent that no one else can smell. So he has this whole world that the lives in through scent that no one else has access to.
What did you like about the book?
I love serial killers. They’re my favorite kind of characters. I think I just liked how he lived in the world through smell. On the exterior he was so grotesque to the world, but he lived his life in the beauty of scent. I love horror films too. I don’t know why. I like the macabre side of life.
