What are you reading right now? Barbarian Days: A Surfing Life by, William Finnegan

Short synopsis: Barbarian Days is William Finnegan’s coming of age memoir chronicling his surf travel and adventures.

Short review: Full disclosure, I am just a little over halfway through so haven’t made it all the way to the end yet… However, as someone without much knowledge of or experience surfing, I am finding this book completely enthralling. His beautifully poetic descriptions and keen observations are matched by fascinating facts about the history of surfing and insights into a culture and time period. Finnegan sucks you right in and onto his board as he brings you from Hawaii to the South Pacific to Africa and beyond. I highly recommend!

Emme’s Favorites

Favorite Nantucket Book: Tracking the Wild Coomba by Robert Cocuzzo. While the story does not technically take place on Nantucket, I know that many, many hours were spent putting words to the page on this island.

Favorite Non-fiction Book: Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer

Favorite Book of 2016: My answer is two-fold. Favorite book that came out in 2016 would be When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi. Favorite book that I read in 2016 overall would be The Country Under My Skin by Gioconda Belli.

Favorite Mystery: In the Woods by Tana French

Favorite Book as A Child: Number the Stars by Lois Lowry (which, to be honest, might still rank as one of my all-time favorite books, regardless of age).

Favorite Author: Jon Krakauer
